ABILENE, Texas (KTXS) – After a family’s dog was attacked by a porcupine in Texas, Deuce was rushed to a veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.

Veterinarians said it was one of the most severe cases of porcupine quills they had seen.

“It was just like a typical morning, you know? Nothing crazy, and then right when we were pulling up, he got a phone call from his dad and he was freaking out, crying, talking about Deuce got into a porcupine,” Asia Guetzkow, whose dog was injured, said. “And my boyfriend was like, ‘We’ll figure it out.’”

As they rushed to save Deuce, the family also knew they were facing an expensive veterinary bill.

Guetzkow turned to the Abilene Helping Hands Facebook page, hoping someone could offer advice or lend a hand.

“I just post it on a whim, really. I was just like, ‘Let’s just hope and pray that someone out there will help us because we love that dog,’” Guetzkow said.

Within minutes, the community responded.

“The community being so willing to help us and we’re all strangers, it meant so much. It really shows that there are good people in this world and Abilene is a really good community to be a part of,” Guetzkow said. “These strangers, without any hesitation, were willing to help. They were calling the vet, making donations and using their hard-earned money to help our dog.”

Donations quickly poured in, and before long, Deuce’s veterinary bill was completely paid.

The support didn’t stop there.

Guetzkow said people continued calling to check on Deuce’s recovery and the veterinary clinic had to turn away donations by the end of the day.
